“What is Gathered Remains”
Naples Botanical Garden
January 23 - June 1, 2027
Opening January 23, 2027, What is Gathered Remains presents Lauren Shapiro’s largest glass sculptures to date at Naples Botanical Garden. Developed with the Garden’s conservation team, the exhibition draws on fieldwork in coastal scrub and maritime habitats, as well as the Garden’s seed bank, which holds more than one million seeds from native plants.
Across three interconnected sculptures, Shapiro will translate the forms of native Southwest Florida species into kiln-carved glass tiles, set within frames inspired by the Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach. Bringing together two vulnerable landscapes, one natural and one built, the works consider what can be preserved and what remains at risk.
The project also extended beyond the studio through public workshops at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, The Kampong, and Naples Botanical Garden, where participants learned about seed conservation and helped create glass tiles using predetermined designs.
What is Gathered Remains is on view at Naples Botanical Garden from January 23 through June 1, 2027.
